First-Responders

First responders risk their lives daily to safeguard their communities. Meaning, this occupation can be highly demanding and stressful, leading many first responders to resort to drugs or alcohol as a means of coping. It is crucial to find addiction treatment specifically tailored for first responders.

THE ADDICTION EPIDEMIC IN AMERICA

Understanding First Responders and Addiction

When an emergency arises, the first people on the scene are typically first responders. These dedicated professionals enter hazardous and emotionally challenging situations to assist others in the community. First responders usually consist of Emergency Medical Services (EMS), Firefighters, and Police officers.

Due to their frequent exposure to dangerous and stressful conditions, first responders are at a heightened risk of developing mental health issues and other behavioral challenges. These can stem from encounters with death, injury, pain, and threats to their safety. These experiences lead to what is known as complex trauma.

Research shows that male and female career firefighters face an increased likelihood of developing post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and addiction, especially if they have experienced complex trauma. A study in 2017 revealed that approximately half of male firefighters reported engaging in binge drinking and heavy drinking within a month.

We believe everyone has the ability to recover from addiction.

Our drug and alcohol rehab in Kentucky is on a mission to truly make a lasting impact on those affected by the disease of addiction in Kentucky, and beyond.

THE IMPORTANCE OF DETOXIFICATION

Finding Tailored Addiction Treatment is Important

The stigma surrounding mental health treatment can hinder first responders. According to the Center for Disease Control, approximately 25% of individuals facing mental health challenges feel that others are understanding of such issues. Surprisingly, over half of those without mental health issues believe others are empathetic toward mental health concerns. So, where lies the disparity? Individuals dealing with mental health problems are more tuned in to how society discusses the topic since it directly affects them. Fear of judgment or lack of comprehension can deter us from sharing our struggles with others.

Research has delved into the prevalence of addiction, PTSD, and other mental health issues among first responders. It has identified elements that can enhance their support in the workplace. Factors like fostering positive relationships with colleagues, cultivating a favorable work environment, feeling the significance of their work, and receiving fair compensation and benefits can positively impact the mental well-being of first responders.

WHAT HAPPENS WHEN I STOP USING?

Benefits of a First Responder Addiction Treatment

When someone goes through trauma, it can change their brain, keeping them in a constant “fight or flight” mode to avoid future trauma. This can lead to mood and personality changes as different parts of the brain get activated.

People with PTSD might experience a range of symptoms, such as unwanted memories, nightmares, and flashbacks. PTSD often makes people feel more anger, guilt, and shame, while also making it hard to feel happiness or joy.

Building and maintaining close relationships can become tough.
If you’ve been through trauma and find daily life challenging, it might be time to work with a trauma-trained therapist. Symptoms like intrusive memories, avoidance behaviors, negative self-thoughts, sleep issues, and difficulty concentrating can affect your day-to-day life.

Sometimes, people use alcohol or drugs to cope with PTSD symptoms, but this can lead to addiction, which needs its own treatment. While substances might seem to dull the pain temporarily, they make things worse in the long run. If this sounds familiar, a PTSD inpatient treatment facility could help.

If you’re feeling hopeless or have frequent thoughts of suicide, please consider talking to a professional. PTSD changes how your brain works, and it can make it feel like there’s no way out. But that’s the negative thinking talking—there are compassionate, caring people who are trained to help those with PTSD, and they can support you through this.

HOW WE HELP

We're Here to Help Kentucky Recover from Addiction.

HOW TO PREPARE FOR DETOXIFICATION

What to Anticipate at a First Responder Rehabilitation Facility

When you start a PTSD treatment program for first responders, you’ll first undergo a medical assessment to determine if you need to participate in a detox program. Detox aims to safely help your body reach sobriety, providing a foundation for recovery. Depending on your addiction, the amount you’ve consumed, and how long you’ve been using, detox can sometimes lead to severe health complications and require medical supervision.

During detox, a team of medical professionals will be available to oversee your withdrawal process. They understand the discomfort and potential pain involved and will work to alleviate your symptoms. The process typically lasts about a week and takes place in a supportive and caring environment.

After detox, you’ll continue treatment at an inpatient rehab facility. Therapy during detox is limited to prevent interference with withdrawal symptoms. First responder rehab programs use a mix of educational groups, process group therapy, and individual therapy sessions to address different aspects of addiction and recovery.

Educational groups will cover topics like addiction, how substance abuse changes the brain, and the changes that occur during recovery. These sessions also focus on relapse prevention, identifying triggers, and developing coping mechanisms. Process group sessions provide a space to share challenges, give and receive feedback, and connect with others experiencing similar issues.

Individual therapy sessions with a counselor or therapist will focus on your struggles and goals, offering a private space to discuss your concerns. At the start of your program, you’ll undergo mental health assessments to identify any issues like depression, anxiety, PTSD, or trauma. If any mental health concerns are detected, specialized treatment will be provided, combining educational, group, and individual sessions to address all your needs.
