Kentucky Medication-Assisted Therapy for Drug & Alcohol Addiction

HOW MAT PROGRAMS CAN IMPROVE RECOVERY

Treating Addiction with Medication-Assisted Therapy

Addiction is a severe affliction, and those impacted by it often have trouble finding the appropriate treatment. Medication-assisted therapy is a viable option to consider. This approach, which incorporates FDA-approved medications, counseling, and behavioral therapy, has shown promise in treating addiction. The medication helps to alleviate cravings and withdrawal symptoms, allowing patients to concentrate on their recovery efforts. While medication-assisted therapy has proven to be successful in treating opioid abuse, it can also be beneficial for alcohol and other substance misuse. By utilizing this method, individuals struggling with addiction have a better chance of overcoming their obstacles and regaining control of their lives.

We believe everyone has the ability to recover from addiction.

Our drug and alcohol rehab in Kentucky is on a mission to truly make a lasting impact on those affected by the disease of addiction in Kentucky, and beyond.

Understanding Medication-Assisted Therapy (MAT) for Substance Abuse

Medication-assisted therapy (MAT) is a viable treatment option for people dealing with various types of substance addiction. When combined with other treatment programs, such as inpatient rehabilitation or outpatient services, MAT can help increase the chances of individuals staying

Given that studies show that between 30-50% of people in recovery may relapse, MAT has emerged as an additional tool to reduce the risk of relapse. MAT has several goals, which include:

  • Lowering the rate of drug and alcohol-related fatalities
  • Reducing the number of people who fail to complete their treatment programs
  • Decreasing drug use, particularly opiates, among people struggling with addiction
  • Enhancing an individual’s ability to perform their daily activities, such as work or school
  • Improving birth outcomes for women who are dealing with addiction while pregnant.

Medications for Medication-Assisted Treatment (MAT): Understanding Your Options

The medications used for MAT are all approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and are carefully chosen to meet each individual’s specific needs. This treatment approach is typically used for individuals with opioid or alcohol use disorders. Among those with opioid use disorders, individuals struggling with pain medication or heroin addiction are common.

When addressing alcohol addiction, acamprosate, disulfiram, and naltrexone are the primary medications used. Alcohol addiction alters the way your brain functions, so acamprosate is used to aid in returning the brain to its previous state. Disulfiram is a medication that produces negative effects in the presence of alcohol, such as headaches, nausea, vomiting, and anxiety. While effective, disulfiram should only be used with the individual’s consent, and taking it as prescribed is critical.

Naltrexone can also be used to reduce alcohol cravings, as well as block the effects of opioids. If an individual has opioids in their system when they begin taking naltrexone, they may experience withdrawal symptoms. This medication can be taken orally on a daily basis, or through an injection administered every four weeks by a healthcare professional.

For individuals with substance abuse disorders, buprenorphine, methadone, and naltrexone can all be used as part of MAT. Methadone is a controlled substance used to reduce cravings, and withdrawal symptoms, and block the effects of opioids. Buprenorphine is also effective in reducing physical dependence on opioids and has a lower rate of misuse when compared to methadone. Naloxone, on the other hand, is used to reverse the effects of opioid overdose in emergency situations and can be administered through various methods such as nasal spray or injection.

If you, or a loved one, struggle with opioid addiction, it is recommended to have naloxone on hand in case of an emergency. Being informed about the different medication options for MAT can help individuals achieve long-term recovery.

Outpatient Treatment Options at The Robert Alexander Center

If you’re seeking an outpatient drug treatment program, it’s important to note that services and programs may differ from one rehab center to the next. The Robert Alexander Center provides a number of treatment options to help you on your road to recovery, including:

  • Medically-assisted treatment: Depending on your addiction, your treatment plan may include medication to aid in your recovery. These medications are closely supervised and approved by medical professionals at our center.
  • Group counseling: Our outpatient treatment programs utilize group counseling sessions to provide a safe and supportive environment to learn and practice new behaviors. These sessions often incorporate a 12-step program and allow patients to connect with others working toward recovery.
  • Cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT): Our CBT program focuses on helping patients identify negative patterns of thought and behavior that lead to drug abuse. We empower our patients to replace these patterns with healthy behaviors that promote sobriety.
  • Individual counseling: Our one-on-one counseling sessions are an essential component of our outpatient treatment program. During these sessions, our therapists work with clients to explore their substance use, identify triggers, and develop specific goals to mark progress toward recovery.
  • Relapse prevention: Our team understands that relapse can be a part of the recovery process for many individuals in drug rehab. That’s why we offer relapse prevention strategies that help patients identify warning signs and triggers. We also work with patients to develop a plan to handle high-risk situations and avoid relapse.

What You Can Anticipate from Our Substance Abuse Medication-Assisted Treatment

The Robert Alexander Center offers medication-assisted treatment (MAT) for substance abuse. During your visit, you will have a comprehensive intake assessment with one of our counselors, who will take the time to understand your unique struggles and requirements.

After the assessment, you will meet with our medical professionals to discuss the medication options typically used for MAT, and they will determine which medication would suit you and your lifestyle the best. While receiving MAT, you will be required to participate in our outpatient addiction treatment program since behavioral changes that happen during active addiction are best addressed through therapy.
