Understanding Bipolar Disorder: Symptoms, Types, and Diagnosis

Bipolar disorder is a mental health condition that is often inaccurately portrayed in the media. Therefore, it is important to disseminate accurate information. According to the National Institute on Mental Health, 2.8% of American adults lived with bipolar disorder in 2021, with little variation between genders. This condition significantly affects a person’s energy levels, activity level, and ability to maintain a daily routine. Understanding the three types of bipolar disorder is crucial. Each type has its own set of similarities and differences in symptom presentation.

Symptoms of Bipolar Disorder

To comprehend the differences between the three types of bipolar disorder, it is important to understand the characteristic symptoms: manic episodes, hypomanic episodes, and depressive episodes. During a manic episode, individuals may experience heightened optimism, goal-oriented behavior, irritability, recklessness, increased self-esteem, reduced need for sleep, rapid speech, racing thoughts, easy distractibility, and engagement in risk-taking behaviors. These symptoms persist for at least one week, affecting most of the day.

Hypomanic episodes share similarities with manic episodes but are less severe, lasting for a minimum of four days. Unlike manic episodes, hypomanic symptoms have a milder impact on daily routines, and individuals maintain a semblance of normalcy. Depressive episodes, occurring over two weeks, involve symptoms such as persistent feelings of depression, loss of interest in previously enjoyed activities, unintended weight loss, changes in sleep patterns, loss of energy, psychomotor agitation, feelings of worthlessness, and recurrent thoughts of death or suicide.

Types of Bipolar Disorder

To diagnose Bipolar I Disorder, individuals must have a history of at least one manic episode and one depressive episode. Bipolar II Disorder is characterized by a history of at least one hypomanic episode, one depressive episode, and no previous manic episodes. Those with Cyclothymic Disorder exhibit symptoms of hypomanic and depressive episodes for two years without fully meeting the criteria for either.

It is crucial to understand the nuances of bipolar disorder for accurate diagnosis and effective management.

Knowing When to Seek Assistance for Bipolar Disorder

Bipolar disorder is a complex condition, and recognizing whether it’s a manic or hypomanic episode can be challenging. If you’ve read the information above and feel that it applies to you, it’s essential to speak with a medical professional or a mental health expert.

Several symptoms of bipolar disorder require treatment by a mental health professional. If someone is experiencing a manic episode, they should be evaluated by a physician or mental health specialist. Even though they may be in a good mood and feel productive, their symptoms should not be ignored. Outpatient treatment may be possible, but hospitalization may be necessary until they achieve stability on their medications.

Individuals with hypomanic episodes typically do not require hospitalization for their symptoms. However, it’s still crucial for their doctor to evaluate them. Depending on the severity of their symptoms and the impact on their daily life, it may be necessary to adjust their medication regimen.

When dealing with depressive episodes, it’s essential to keep an eye out for any recurring thoughts of suicide, death, or suicide planning. While thoughts of death are a natural part of life, having these thoughts frequently or progressing to suicidal ideation can be concerning. If you find yourself contemplating suicide or planning an attempt, it’s vital to seek help right away. You’re not alone, and there are professionals available to support you during this difficult time.

Treatment for Bipolar Disorder: A Comprehensive Approach

Bipolar treatment centers offer a combination of medication and mental health counseling to help manage the symptoms of bipolar disorder. Finding the right medication and dosage may require some trial and error as everybody is different. This usually involves a combination of mood stabilizers, atypical antipsychotic medication, and antidepressants. It is essential to follow the prescribed medication regimen to maintain their effectiveness. Stopping medication without a doctor’s supervision can worsen symptoms until treatment is resumed.

Psychotherapy is an important component of bipolar treatment. It provides education on the disorder and helps individuals navigate their diagnosis. The counselor offers support and “talk therapy” to address any concerns. With proper treatment, individuals with bipolar disorder can lead a long, fulfilling life.

If someone with bipolar disorder develops a dependence or addiction to drugs or alcohol during a manic episode, they may require comprehensive outpatient addiction treatment programs.

Our range of programs includes Partial Hospitalization, Intensive Outpatient, Outpatient Treatment, and Family Treatment. For those who participate in our treatment programs, we also offer a sober living option that includes transportation to and from our centers.

At our Partial Hospitalization Program, we provide 30 hours of group therapy and 1 hour of individual therapy per week. Our experienced professionals will work with you to identify unhealthy thoughts, regulate your emotions, and teach you new coping skills. This is not an inpatient program, so you can return home when you’re not in treatment.

Our Intensive Outpatient Program is designed to help you improve your social skills, focus on relapse prevention, and address common challenges in early recovery. You will attend at least 15 hours of group therapy and 1 hour of individual therapy each week. We will work with you to create a schedule that’s respectful of your time and availability.

Our Outpatient treatment offers traditional and alternative therapies to ensure you receive the care you need. With three groups and one individual session per week, we will focus on relapse prevention, addiction triggers, and coping skills. With outpatient therapy, you can continue to maintain your work, school, and family responsibilities while receiving addiction treatment.

Our treatment approach is tailored to meet the unique needs of each individual. As such, we offer a seamless transition between our different treatment programs to ensure you receive continued care in the early stages of recovery. We understand that mental health treatment may be necessary for some individuals, which is why we offer mental health treatment services, including treatment for bipolar disorder.
