Introduction To Cocaine Addiction

Understanding The Evolution and Danger of Cocaine Use

Cocaine has been historically utilized for medical purposes since the 15th century, particularly as a surgical anesthesia. Although it is still legal to use cocaine for medical purposes, it is hardly ever used due to its high potential for addiction.

Cocaine, a stimulant, is derived from the coca plant that is commonly found in South America. Illegally bought cocaine is often mixed with other white powders like cornstarch and talcum powder to increase profits for sellers. The mixture of cocaine with opioids like fentanyl can be fatal to the user when they are unaware of the content.

As with other addictive substances, cocaine increases the brain’s natural levels of dopamine, which is linked to the reward system. The feeling of euphoria that results from increased levels of dopamine is why the drug is so addictive. However, repeated use of cocaine may not be as pleasurable as the first experience. Long-term cocaine use leads to brain adaptation, which may cause an individual to crave more of the drug to achieve the desired effect, also known as developing a tolerance.

According to a 2020 study by the National Institute on Drug Abuse, 1.9% of individuals aged 12 and above reported using cocaine in the past year. Of that number, 0.5% were found to have a cocaine use disorder. Research indicates that cocaine is also being used by preteens and teenagers. In 2021, a study found that 1.2% of high school seniors and 0.2% of 8th graders used cocaine in the past year.

Understanding Cocaine Withdrawal and Its Symptoms

When a person suddenly stops using cocaine or reduces their intake, they will likely experience withdrawal symptoms. These symptoms may include any or all of the following:

  • Intense cravings to use again
  • Fatigue
  • Irritability
  • Lethargy
  • Agitation
  • Loss of pleasure
  • Vivid dreams
  • Paranoia

Unlike other drugs, cocaine does not usually result in physical symptoms such as vomiting during withdrawal. As a result, cocaine withdrawal is typically not a medical emergency. However, some individuals may still experience severe withdrawal symptoms that require medical attention to manage.

It’s important to note that if the person was using cocaine mixed with opioids, their withdrawal symptoms are likely to include physical symptoms. If these physical symptoms, such as vomiting and sweating, become severe, it can lead to dehydration and become a health crisis that requires medical attention.

Cocaine’s Effects on Behavior and the Body

When cocaine addiction sets in, both physical and behavioral changes are likely to occur. Those who feel cocaine dependence, using it to jumpstart their day, are likely to experience such changes. Chronic use can lead to several negative health consequences, as cocaine is a stimulant that disrupts sleep, leading to psychotic symptoms like hallucinations and delusions.

Different methods of cocaine use can lead to a range of long-term health consequences. For example, those who snort cocaine may experience nosebleeds, loss of smell, and difficulty swallowing. Smoking cocaine can contribute to respiratory distress, oral health concerns, and even asthma. Intravenous users are at a higher risk of contracting HIV, Hepatitis B, and C if they use unsterile equipment. This method of use can also cause collapsed veins and scarring at injection sites.

Like other addictions, behavioral changes can occur with cocaine abuse. Individuals may struggle at work or school and face strained relationships with loved ones and friends. They may engage in risk-taking behaviors, and even experience legal troubles. You might notice that they have stopped engaging in activities they once enjoyed and that they carry drug paraphernalia like straws or pipes.

Understanding Cocaine Overdoses: Symptoms and Prevention

Cocaine overdose is a serious health hazard that can occur at any time of use, regardless of whether it’s the first or hundredth time someone has used the drug. Individuals who mix cocaine with other substances, particularly opioids like heroin, are at a higher risk of overdose.

The following symptoms are associated with a cocaine overdose:

  • Increased body temperature
  • Increased heart rate
  • Chest pains
  • Tremors
  • Nausea and vomiting
  • Anxiety
  • Paranoia

Cocaine overdose can be fatal, so it should be treated as a medical emergency. Because fentanyl and other opioids are frequently mixed with cocaine, administering Narcan during an overdose can be beneficial. It’s difficult for users to know for sure what is in the drugs they consume, so even if they don’t think they’ve taken an opioid, a blood test is the only way to be certain.

Narcan is an opioid overdose reversal medication that can save lives in cases of opioid overdoses, such as fentanyl. However, it will not reverse an overdose that is not caused by an opioid. According to the National Institute on Drug Abuse, 19,447 fatal overdoses in 2020 involved cocaine.
